WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM! SUMMER PRESCHOOL AT CHILDREN'S CARE IN RAPID CITY

Children's Care in Rapid City offered a two-week summer preschool with two different times 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. for children ages three to five. Small class size provided an opportunity for individualized instruction.

The preschool program was theme (Ice Cream and Airplanes) and literacy based to promote skills critical to pre-reading development, as well as for language, speech, socialization, fine motor, and gross motor development skills.

    • Physical therapy (gross motor skills) needs were met through movement activities such as jumping, throwing, running and stretching.
    • Occupational therapy (visual/fine motor skills) goals were met through cutting, coloring, use of manipulatives, as well as art activities.
    • Speech therapy (speech and language skills) objectives were met through receptive (listening and understanding) and expressive language (talking and answering questions) activities. Early literacy opportunities included both reading and writing activities.

A portion of the program was paid for through a grant from Target Corporation. This helped provide an opportunity for children who couldn't otherwise afford the preschool program. The grant also helped pay for books that the children got to take home at the end of the preschool program.

In Sioux Falls, Children's Care offered its regular Extended School Year program this past summer, with its busiest year ever. In addition, the Children's Care Rehabilitation Center in Sioux Falls provided several summer camps for children.
