Handwriting is an important skill that impacts not only a child’s education, but also a child’s development.  Handwriting plays an important role in brain development and enhances neural activity in the brain.  It sets the foundation for other abilities like reading, language use, writing, and critical thinking.  Handwriting helps develop a child’s fine motor skills, visual motor skills, and coordination, which are required to become independent with daily living skills, including dressing, eating, using the bathroom, grooming, and play.
Children can develop adequate handwriting skills by spending just 15 minutes daily working on handwriting.  Some children show little interest in handwriting, which can make participation in handwriting activities difficult at home.   That’s where handwriting camps at LifeScape, (Formerly Children's Care), can be very helpful. Experienced occupational therapists use a multisensory approach that makes handwriting fun for your child, giving him or her skills that will last a lifetime.
In Rapid City, Handwriting Camp is Mondays to Thursdays, July 21 – 31, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m., and offers review in uppercase and lowercase letters, plus skills for learning to print sentences and write stories.  Cost is $150.
In Sioux Falls, there are three handwriting camps, taught by South Dakota’s only practitioners certified in Handwriting Without Tears®: Preschoolers/Kindergarten Handwriting Camp is August 11 – 13 from 8:30 – 10 a.m., and focuses on identifying letters of the alphabet and making letter shapes.  Printing Camp is August 4 – 6 and 11 – 13, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., and teaches uppercase and lower case printing.  Cursive class is August 11 -13, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., and helps 3rd through 5th graders master the brain-enhancing art of cursive writing. The cost for the Sioux Falls camps are: $150, $250, and $150 respectively.
The Rapid City camp will be held at LifeScape, 7110 Jordan Drive in Rapid City. To learn more or register call (605) 791 – 7400.
The Sioux Falls camp will be held at LifeScape, 1020 W 18th Street in Sioux Falls. To learn more or register call (605) 444 – 9700.
